PTE Write from Dictation: Strategy & Scoring
Write from Dictation (WFD) is short but one of the highest-value tasks in PTE Academic: you hear a single sentence once and type it exactly. It feeds both your Listening and Writing scores, and because each correct word earns marks, it is one of the fastest tasks to improve with daily practice.
How Write from Dictation works
You hear a sentence of roughly 8–12 words once, then type it into a text box. It comes at the very end of the Listening part. You typically face three to four of these.
Step-by-step strategy
- 1As you listen, jot key words or the first letters of each word on your note board.
- 2Immediately reconstruct the full sentence from your notes while it is fresh.
- 3Type carefully and spell every word correctly — spelling counts.
- 4If you miss a word, write what you are sure of; partial answers still score.
- 5Use any remaining time to re-read and fix obvious typos.
Drill dictation daily
Write from Dictation is pure pattern recognition and improves fast with repetition. A few sentences every day sharpens your memory span and spelling, producing some of the quickest score gains in the whole test.
How it is scored
- Each correctly spelled word in the right place earns a mark — partial credit is full and generous.
- Capitalisation is not penalised, but spelling is, so type accurately.
- There is no penalty for a missing word, so always type every word you caught.
- Because it feeds Listening and Writing, correct words boost two skills at once.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to type while still listening and falling behind.
- Misspelling otherwise-correct words and losing easy marks.
- Leaving the box empty when you only caught part of the sentence.
- Adding extra words you did not hear instead of typing only what you remember.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Write from Dictation so important?
It feeds both your Listening and Writing scores, and each correct word earns marks with generous partial credit. That dual value, plus how quickly it improves with practice, makes it one of the best tasks to drill daily.
Do I lose marks for getting some words wrong?
No. You earn a mark for each correct word and there is no penalty for a missing one, so always type every word you remember — even a partial sentence scores well.
